Les Misérables contains themes of poverty, prostitution, suicide, revolution, and intense violence:
- Injury and death caused by gunshots and stabbing

Some intimate moments may include:

Characters
The Mains
JEAN VALJEAN – (Male, 35-55) Vocal Range: G#2-B4. High lyrics baritone or tenor, with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto. A poor peasant who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity.
JAVERT – (Male, 35-55) Vocal Range: F2-F#4. Baritone. Must have a natural gravitas with ability to be expressive and dynamic. Policemen who relentlessly hunts Valjean. An imposing character. The ultimate ‘law and order’ figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with rigid and merciless moral code.
FANTINE - (Female, 20s-30s) Vocal Range: F3-Eb5. Poor but beautiful and elegant factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although she is finally defeated by circumstances, she should appear to be strong and a survivor. She puts up a valiant fight against the horrors of her life.
The House of Thenardier
THENARDIER - (Male, 35-50) Vocal Range: C2-G4. Baritone, sings to F sharp. Strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irrerent, selfish, boorish, vulgar.
MADAME THENARDIER - (Female, 30-50) Vocal Range: G#3-D5). Belter. Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar. Strong character comedienne role.
LITTLE COSETTE - (Female, 7-12) Vocal Range: A3-C5. oung Cosette is Fantine’s daughter and the Thénardiers’ ward. She has been forced into child labor. She is underfed, beaten by Madame Thénardier, and bullied by Eponine.
COSETTE - (Female, 18-25) Vocal Range: Bb3-C6. Soprano to high C but a light, young ‘floating’ sound, without heavy vibrato. Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child) delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius.
YOUNG EPONINE - (Female, 7-12) Young Eponine is the pampered daughter of the Thénardiers. She does little except taunt Young Cosette.
EPONINE - (Female, 18-25) Vocal Range: F3-E5. An enormous and beautiful belt voice, with a contemporary edge. Belts to C sharp, sings to E flat. Daughter of the Thénardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Gamine. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve.
MONTPARNASSE - (Male, flexible) C#3-C#4A member of Thénardier’s gang of thieves. Montparnasse is handsome and dangerous (he kills with a knife).
BABET - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: E3-E4. A member of Thénardier’s gang of thieves.
BRUJON - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: B3-C#4. A member of Thénardier’s gang of thieves. A genuine gangster, Brujon is stupid and evil.
CLAQUESOUS - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: C4-E4. A member of Thénardier’s gang of thieves. Claquesous is tough, dangerous, and secretive.
The ABC Society
ENJOLRAS - (Male, 20-29) Vocal Range: A2-G4. High baritone/tenor to G sharp/ B flat. Very strong singer. Handsome, charismatic political figure, leader of the revolutionary movement.
MARIUS - (Male, 18-25) Vocal Range: A2-Ab4. High baritone, sings to A with a strong bottom A. Member of the revolutionary student movement. Attractive and romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century ‘Byronic’ way.
COMBEFERE - (Male, Flexible) Vocal Range: E3-D4. Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Combeferre is the philosopher and believer in peace. He is gentle, humane, strong, and brave.
FEUILLY - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: D3-D4. Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Feuilly is a worker who is a self-educated orphan. He is an affectionate, warm, and poetic believer in "nationality."
COURFEYRAC - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: E3-Eb4. Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Courfeyrac is a youthful, passionate, and fearless student.
JOLY - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: D3-G4. Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Joly is an eccentric and light-hearted (although sometimes morbid) medical student. His name is derived from the English word “jolly.”
GRANTAIRE - (Male, flexible) To form part of the ensemble, along with the featured ensemble part of Grantaire. A cynical student who has little interest in the revolution but who holds much admiration for Enjolras. Witty and sarcastic.
LESGLES - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: B3-G4. Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Lesgles is a cheerful, laughing-at-life (but unlucky) student. He is a close friend of Joly.
JEAN PROUVAIRE - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: D3-Eb4. Member of the ABC society, a secret society of students and workers. Prouvaire is a kind, soft-spoken, and, at the right moments, strong and masterful poet and student of social studies.
GAVROCHE - (Male, 8-12) Vocal Range: B3-G5. Gavroche is Thénardier’s son. He is left to fend for himself and lives by his wits in the streets of Paris. Gavroche is brave, witty, and arrogant, with a fantastic, unchanged voice.
Supporting Characters
BISHOP OF DIGNE - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: A2-E4. Must have a strong, rich lower register to a bottom A. A religious man who, despite Valjean’s theft of his valuable possessions, sees passed the convict and allows him to move on with his new life.
FOREMAN - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: D3-D4. An overbearing, sleazy man who runs the factory. Sacks Fantine, leaving her destitute.
BAMATBOIS - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: D3-D5. A nasty and dangerous upper-class man who lecherously approaches Fantine for the night. When she declines and attacks him, he calls on Javert to arrest her.
FAUCHELEVANT - (Male, flexible) Vocal Range: B3-Eb4. Fauchelevant is the victim of the cart crash.
ARMY OFFICER - (Male, flexible)
ENSEMBLE MEN - Must be able to sing to at least a G.

The Audition
Please plan to be there for 1.5-2 hours. The audition process is time-consuming and we will do our best to stay on schedule.
For auditions, we ask you to sing 32 bars of a show tune (about a minute's worth). A pianist will be available, and we encourage sheet music, but you are welcome to have a non-vocal backing track. There will be a speaker and an aux cord in the room to use. The singing audition will take about 30 minutes per group.
Once you are done singing, you will head upstairs to the 3rd Floor for the dance audition. We suggest you bring dance shoes (jazz, character, tennis shoes) and a change of clothes if you want. The dance audition will take about 40 minutes. You will before in pairs in front of the directors at the end of the 40 minutes.
Callbacks will be announced Saturday evening around 8:00p via email only. If you are called back, you will be asked to read and sing the sides found below.
