TNPA Beetlejuice Jr/TNPA Six: Teen Auditions

For this audition, please prepare 32 bars of a song to sing (about a minute’s worth).  Preferably sheet music, hole punched, in a binder.  Non-vocal backing tracks are also acceptable.  Please plan to be there for 1.5-2 hours.  The audition process is time-consuming and we will do our best to stay on schedule.

Beetlejuice Jr (Teal Level)

Ages: Rising 6th Grade-Rising 9th Grade

Lydia Deetz is a strange and unusual teenager, still grieving the loss of her mother and obsessed with the whole “being dead thing.” Lucky for Lydia, she and her father move to a new house haunted by a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a delightful demon with a real zest for life. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter shows his true stripes, unleashing a (Nether)world of pandemonium.

Characters:

• LYDIA DEETZ – (Female, Range: E5-A3) Whip-smart, grieving fifteen- year-old whose dark sense of humor helps her cope with the loss of her mother, Emily. Lydia is unfazed by Beetlejuice’s antics and easily holds her own against both him and all things Netherworld.
• CHARLES DEETZ – (Male, Range: F5-Bb3) Lydia’s father. He wants to help her get over the loss of her mother, although the ways he tries to “help” aren’t really what Lydia needs. Charles is under a lot of pressure between his concerns over Lydia, his secret relationship with Delia, his professional life, and his own grief (which he tries to ignore)..
• BEETLEJUICE – (Flexible, Range: E5-G3) The dead guy of the hour! This titular character is zany, spooky, and absolutely hilarious. Though Beetlejuice exists in a morally gray area, he’s more of a trickster than a malevolent threat. He’s happy to align his interests with others, but ultimately, he’s looking out for himself..
• ADAM MAITLAND – (Male, Range: Eb5-Bb3) Devoted husband of Barbara, just can’t catch a break. While life’s stresses were getting to him – renovation of the house, financial difficulties, and the decision about having a child – he certainly wasn’t ready for death.
• BARBARA MAITLAND – (Female, Range: D5-A3) Barbara’s stresses align with her husband’s, in life and death, although Barbara is a bit more adventurous than Adam. She is very kind but also strong-willed and a quick thinker. Barbara immediately bonds with Lydia.
• DELIA SCHLIMMER – (Female, Range: C#5-G2) A lecherous public official who portrays himself as a sanctimonious authoritarian. He takes advantage of his position in the city and is responsible for imprisoning Todd.
• MAXIE DEAN – (Male, Range: C5-C4) The business tycoon whom Charles hopes to impress.
• SKY – (Female, Range: C5-G3)
• MISS ARGENTINA – (Female, Range: D5-A3) Former beauty queen, greets the recently dead in the Netherworld. She leads “What I Know Now”.
• MAXINE DEAN – (Female, No range provided) Maxie’s fourth (or fifth) wife)
• OTHO – (Flexible, No range provided) Delia’s guru and occasional exorsist.
• JUNO – (Female, No range provided) Beetlejuice’s mother, runs the recently dead intake with an iron fist. She has “a voice like road tar” and no sympathy for anyone.

Characters:

• CATHERINE OF ARAGON – (Range: Ab3-Eb5) A real badass monarch. Commanding, sure of herself, bold. She lights up the room.
• ANNE BOLEYN – (Range: C4-E5) Fun-loving, always up for a laugh. Never takes anything too seriously, but at the same time lives for the drama. Some have described her as a “chaos goblin.” 
• JANE SEYMOUR – (Range: A3-D5) Kind and sincere. Loves a dad joke, but no one is ever impressed with Jane’s attempts at comedy. 
• ANNA OF CLEVES – (Range: G3-B4) Savvy, loves her life, won history and no one even knows it. Cleves is here for a good time.
• KATHERINE HOWARD – (Range: A3-F#5) Super smart with a wicked sense of humor. Remembered as “the promiscuous one” – but she is SO much more than that..
• CATHERINE PARR – (Range: A3-E5) Grounded, thoughtful and warm. Loves the other queens. A champion of female empowerment.
