Audition @ TNP

Become a Performer @ TNP

When you volunteer as a performer with The Naples Players, you become part of our family and integral in making our quality productions possible. We are committed to providing you with a volunteer experience in which you will have fun, learn something new, and know that your time and talent are appreciated.

We find that the fear of auditioning often prevents those with amazing talents from ever taking the opportunity to “try-out” for a show. But rest assured, at The Naples Players, we are excited to encourage your talents. Continue reading below to learn more about what to expect for Play auditions, Musical Auditions, and Casting!

Auditioning for a Play – What to Expect…

BEFORE THE AUDITION
    1. Sign up online!
      1. We ask for basic information: name, phone, email, how did you hear about us, etc.
      2. Read through the conflict sheet and list all conflicts you might have with rehearsal dates.
      3. You’ll be asked what roles you’d like to “read” (audition) for and what roles you do not want to be considered for.
        1. If you fill in a specific character, please plan on staying at auditions longer so we can accommodate the request.
        2. You can check any of the characters on the provided list; or choose to be considered for ALL roles!
        3. Ideally, before the audition day you will already have prepared from the audition “sides” (short scenes) for the characters you want to be considered for (Once you have signed-up, the link to these scenes will be emailed to you a few weeks before the audition – and you can always find them on our website by clicking here).
    2. We cast understudies; and they will be guaranteed one performance during the run! With that in mind you’ll be asked if you would like to be considered for an understudy role, as well.
    3. Finally, you will have the option to select if you would like a follow up about your audition via email or phone call AFTER the cast list has been posted.
ON THE AUDITION DAY
      1. Auditions begin at noon with all actors who signed up.
        1. If you can’t make a noon call time, please contact the Production Stage Manager ([email protected])
      2. Check in with the audition assistants at the front desk in the Lobby.
      3. We will be taking a head to toe picture for the directors and costume shop to reference.
      4. All actors will be in the room with the directors watching each other read the prepared “sides.”
        1. Everyone will get to read at-least once from 12:00p-2:00p
        2. There may be times that you are sitting, watching, and waiting for your turn – thank you for your patience!
      5. The directing team will break from 2:00p-3:00p.
      6. Actors may be asked to return at 3:00p for additional and role specific reading.
        1. This will be the time an actor’s request for a specific character will be filled.
        2. If an actor is not called back, they are welcome to stay and observe the rest of the process.
      7. Actors will be dismissed as a group once the directors have seen everyone.

THE AUDITION DAY

    1. Auditions begin at noon for the first time slot group.
    2. Check in with the audition assistants at the front desk in the Lobby.
    3. We will be taking a head to toe picture for the directors and costume shop to reference.
    4. Actors will sing individually.
      1. Actors need to prepare 32 bars to sing.
        1. A pianist is provided to play sheet music
        2. Non-vocal backing tracks are also acceptable.
    5. After every actor in the time slot group sings, they will be guided upstairs to learn a short dance combination.
      1. It is best to bring a pair of jazz or character shoes and a change of clothes.
      2. The dancing is about seeing each actor’s comfortability with movement.  You do not need to be a dancer, just have fun!
    6. Once the directors have seen the group dance, actors are dismissed.
    7. At the end of the audition day actors will receive an email about call backs. You may be asked to come to “callbacks” on the following day to read and sing more character specific work. We will tell you which characters to prepare for.

CALL BACK DAY

    1. Call Backs begin at noon for all actors called back.
    2. Check in with the audition assistants at the front desk in the Lobby.
    3. All actors will be in the room with the directors encouraging each-other as you sing and read the sides.
    4. Actors may be asked to return later in the day for additional and role specific reading.
      1. If an actor is not called back, they are welcome to stay and observe the rest of the process.
    5. Actors will be dismissed as a group once the directors have seen everyone.

The Casting Process

      1. The casting process will take us a couple of days to finish; while we take our time to ensure each performer is fully considered.
      2. An email will be sent out to the group of auditionees on the following Wednesday with the completed cast list. NO ONE will be contacted in advance of the cast list being distributed.
      3. Actors cast in the show will receive a follow up phone call on Thursday to confirm their acceptance.
        1. Thursday will also be the day we will contact understudies.
      4. If TNP doesn’t hear back from an actor by Friday at 4:00p, we will assume they have accepted their role.
      5. The following Monday the cast list will be posted to The Naples Players website with a link underneath to start signing up for crew; as we are never able to cast every actor who auditions – but you can still be a big part of the show!

Can’t Make the Audition?

If you are unable to attend the audition day there are several options.  Contact Cole Butcher, Production Stage Manager, [email protected] to discuss which option you would like to pursue:

    1. This can be the week leading up to the auditions or the week before.
    2. Contact Cole and he will work with the directors to find the best day to accommodate everyone’s schedule.
  2. IF there is a Callback Day, schedule to come in early on Callback day.
    1. Contact Cole to let him know you are able to make noon on Callback day as an option.
  3. Out of town/Traveling? Send in a video!
    1. Video auditions are always accepted.
