At 92,
Val Kuffel embodies a life richly lived, a true renaissance man whose journey spans continents and careers. His path wound from Illinois to Omaha, Nebraska, California, and Massachusetts, eventually leading him to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he dedicated 26 years as the Deputy Commissioner of Tourism. Yet, the stage always called. Along the way, Val nurtured his passion for the arts, performing in films, commercials (both on-screen and via voice-overs), and local theaters. A graduate of Omaha University with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, he also carved out time for his other creative outlets: painting with acrylics and oils, and intricate line drawings.

In 1995, Val decided to return stateside, choosing the sunny climes of Naples, Florida, where golf, tennis, and local theater beckoned. After five years of travel between locations, he made the permanent move and retired fully in 2000. It wasn’t long before he found his new home at The Naples Players (TNP). He jumped in headfirst, auditioning and securing significant roles in productions like You Can’t Take It With You, Mauritius, and All My Sons, alongside supporting roles in Black Tie and Barefoot in the Park.

Val’s involvement deepened when he transitioned to TNP’s The Readers Theater, joining its board in 2004. This new chapter allowed him to maintain his creativity while reducing the demands of memorizing lines and extensive rehearsals. “We would read 30, 40 or 50 plays,” Val recounts, “and then our committee would recommend plays for the season.” He cherished the connections made with fellow enthusiastic volunteers and found immense reward in bringing new plays to life on stage, eventually working closely with acclaimed local playwright Carole Fenstermacher. For Val, Readers Theater is a vital way to keep his creative juices flowing and his mind sharp.
He speaks highly of TNP’s remarkable resilience during the recent renovation, performing admirably in various venues.
“In so many ways, TNP is a model for impactful community theater,” Val remarks. “I feel privileged to be part of the volunteer family.”
His story is a testament to the enduring power of passion and community connection at any age.
