When We Were Young & Unafraid

Playwright Sarah Treem’s (“House of Cards,” “In Treatment”) powerful play takes us inside an underground women’s shelter in the early 1970s…before Roe v. Wade, before the Violence Against Women Act, before women had places to turn in times of distress. In this play, Agnes, a strong-willed, loner of a woman, has turned her quiet bed and breakfast into one of the few spots where a woman on the run can seek refuge. But to Agnes’s dismay, her latest feisty young runaway Mary Anne is having a profound influence on her teenage daughter Penny, forcing each girl to question her destiny. And as the drums of the feminist revolution grow louder, Agnes is forced to confront her own presumptions about the people she’s been trying to help.

What is love versus infatuation versus obsession? What is the role of women? Can feminism be reconciled with marriage and family? How can a mother guide a daughter without alienating her? Why do women make self-defeating decisions when virtually certain of the dark consequences? These are among the questions explored in Sarah Treem’s entertaining and sometimes surprising When We Were Young and Unafraid.

An Ideal Husband

Oscar Wilde’s wickedly witty yet touching comedy revolves around blackmail, political corruption and public and private honor in late 19th- century England, where “an ideal husband” must be above reproach in both spheres. Sir Robert Chiltern is a well-regarded politician happily married to a loving wife. His status as an ideal husband is threatened when evidence of a past indiscretion appears. Sir Robert turns to his friend Lord Goring, who takes matters into his own hands.
